Crispy Smashed Potatoes Recipe | Kitchenstagram
Golden and crackly on the outside with a soft, cloud-like center, Smashed Potatoes bring the best of both textures to the plate. Every uneven edge turns beautifully crisp in the oven, creating irresistible crunchy bites in every mouthful. The combination of roasted garlic, herbs and a cheesy finish adds layers of rich, comforting flavour that make these impossible to ignore once they hit the table.
What makes this dish stand out is the contrast between the crispy shell and the creamy middle. A quick boil ensures the potatoes stay tender before roasting transforms them into crisp perfection. The rougher the surface after smashing, the more golden bits you get, which means extra crunch in every bite.
These potatoes fit effortlessly alongside everything from grilled meats to fresh salads, but they are just as satisfying served on their own as a snack or appetizer. Their warm, buttery texture and deeply roasted flavour make the kind of side dish everyone reaches for first.
Another reason they’re such a favorite. They can be prepared ahead of time, making entertaining or weeknight dinners much easier. Simply roast until perfectly crisp and serve hot for a tray of potatoes that disappears first. One bite of these crunchy, fluffy potatoes and ordinary roasted potatoes suddenly feel far less exciting.

Ingredients needed for Smashed Potatoes:
Potatoes: Small yellow or starchy potatoes work best for this recipe. They become fluffy and creamy inside while turning wonderfully crisp around the edges during roasting. Smaller potatoes also cook more evenly and create the best crunchy texture.
Butter: Melted butter adds richness, flavour and extra crispiness. Salted butter is especially delicious here because it enhances the savory flavour of the potatoes.
Olive Oil: Olive oil helps the potatoes develop deeply golden, crispy exterior. Brushing oil on to the baking tray, also ensures the bottoms crisp up beautifully.
Garlic: Garlic adds a bold, aromatic flavour that pairs perfectly with the buttery potatoes and gives every bite extra depth.
Salt & Black Pepper: Essential for seasoning and bringing out the natural flavour of the potatoes while balancing the richness of the butter and cheese.
Parmesan Cheese: Parmesan cheese adds a salty, nutty finish and creates irresistible crispy cheesy bits as the potatoes roast.
Serving Suggestions:
Ultra Crispy Smashed Potatoes are the kind of side dish that disappears fast. With their crunchy golden edges and soft, fluffy centers, they fit just as well on a dinner table as they do on a party platter. Serve them straight from the oven while they’re still hot and crackly for the best texture.
They pair beautifully with grilled chicken, fish, steak, burgers or even a simple salad. Their crisp texture also make them ideal for dipping, so adding a flavourful sauce on the side is always a great idea. For extra flavour, finish them with a sprinkle of cheese, fresh herbs, chili flakes or a touch of sea salt just before serving.
These potatoes also work wonderfully as an appetizer or casual party snack because they’re easy to pick up and enjoy without utensils. Whether served alongside a hearty main course or enjoyed on their own, they always bring plenty of crunch and comfort to the table.
Can I make ahead?
These smashed potatoes are easy to prep ahead, making them perfect for busy dinners or holiday meals. Cook the potatoes in advance, allow them to cool and refrigerate until needed. When it’s time to serve, simply flatten them, add your favourite seasonings and roast until crisp and golden. Preparing them this way saves time while still giving you that freshly baked crunchy texture evryone loves.
Storage Tips:
Leftovers can be refrigerated in a sealed container for several days without losing their texture completely. To bring back that golden crunch, reheat them in a hot oven until crisp and heated through. They’re especially delicious the next day. As the edges become even crunchier after reheating.

A moderate amount of oil helps the edges turn beautifully golden and crunchy during roasting.
