Homemade peanut butter has an unbeatable rich peanut flavour and a silky texture that surpasses any store-bought brand. It’s so good, you might find yourself eating it straight from the jar. Plus, it’s healthier, free from preservatives, artificial additives and packed with natural goodness.
To make your own peanut butter, use roasted peanuts as the base. Blend them until they turn into a creamy puree, adding a touch of honey for sweetness is desired. A pinch of salt enhances the flavour and a splash of oil can help achieve the perfect consistency. Customize it to your liking by adjusting the sweetness, saltiness or adding fun extras like cocoa powder or cinnamon powder.
Peanut butter isn’t just delicious- it’s versatile too! Spread it on toast, swirl it into oatmeal, blend it into smoothies or enjoy it straight from the jar. It’s a hit with kids and adults alike, making it a fantastic addition to your kitchen.
Homemade peanut butter is not only cheaper than store-bought versions, but it also allows you to control the ingredients, ensuring a wholesome product. Whether you prefer it smooth, chunky, sweetened or unsweetened, you can make it exactly how you like.
Ingredients needed for Peanut Butter:
Peanuts: Unsalted peanuts are ideal for making peanut butter as they allow you to control the saltiness. You can use either roasted or raw peanuts. If using raw peanuts, roast them thoroughly and remove the skin for a better texture and flavour. Even with pre-roasted peanuts, a quick re-roast enhances the nutty aroma. Raw peanuts are usually fresher, making them a preferred choice for many. Watching whole peanuts transform into a smooth, creamy spread is a rewarding experience.
Sweetener: A small amount of sweetener, like maple syrup, honey or regular sugar, adds depth to the flavour. Even if you are not a fan of sweet spreads, just a little bit of sweetener can elevate the taste without overpowering it.
Oil: Adding oil not only improves the creaminess but also acts as a natural preservative, helping maintain the perfect consistency. Groundnut or peanut oil works well, but you can also use a neutral-flavored oil like peanut, coconut or avocado oil for a smoother texture.
Salt: While optional, salt enhances the natural sweetness of the peanut butter, creating a balanced flavour. Adding a pinch can make a big difference, so it’s worth including even if it’s not a necessity.
Use of Peanut Butter:
Homemade peanut butter is a versatile and delicious staple that can elevate countless meals and snacks. Here are some creative and tasty ways to use it:
Spread it: Slather it on a crusty bread, toast, homemade English muffins or fluffy biscuits for a quick and satisfying treat. It’s also amazing with fresh fruit like bananas or apples.
Breakfast Boost: Stir spoonful into your morning oatmeal, granola or overnight oats for a creamy texture and a protein-packed start to the day.
Smoothies: Add a dollop to your smoothies for a nutty flavour and an extra protein kick.
Sweet Treats: Use it in baking! It’s perfect for chocolate peanut butter no-bake cookies, classic peanut butter cookies or indulgent chocolate chip cookie dough bars.
Snacks: Make Homemade granola bars or energy balls using peanut butter as the binding ingredient.
Savory dishes: Whisk it into a tangy peanut sauce for noodles, spring rolls or grain bowls. Alternatively, make a creamy peanut dressing to drizzle over fresh summer slaw.
Storage Tips:
Store homemade peanut butter in the fridge for freshness, especially if it will take several weeks to finish. Store homemade peanut butter in a airtight container in the fridge for up to 12 weeks. If consuming within a week or two, room temperature works fine. Stir well before use, as natural oils may separate.
Ingredients
300 gm Raw Peanuts
1-2 tbsp Peanut Oil
A pinch of Salt
2 tbsp Honey
Preparation
- Step 1: Take raw peanuts in a frying pan, roast on low medium flame. Roast until golden brown and crisp. Switch off.

- Step 2: Remove the skin- transfer the peanuts into a piece of cloth, just rub with your fingers /palms and blow off the skin. Peanuts are ready now.

- Step 3: To a dry mixer jar add the roasted peanuts. Grind it for a few seconds, first it will become brittle. Scrape the sides and the bottom. Grind it again until it will start to come together and will be sticky.

- Step 4: Grind it for few more seconds and it will become clumpy. Grind it again and it will become more like a paste. Next, add peanut oil and salt, grind it again.

- Step 5: Add honey and grind it until smooth and creamy peanut butter is ready.

- Step 6: Now remove and transfer to clean dry jar preferably glass. Store in fridge and enjoy!!
Pro tips:
Texture control- If you prefer crunchy peanut butter, stop grinding after you find some pieces of peanuts. For smooth peanut butter, grind longer until you achieve the desired consistency.
Roasting Impact: The peanut butter’s colour and flavour depend on how much you roast the peanuts. Roastings until golden brown results in a rich, nutty flavour and a smoother , flowing consistency that lasts for weeks.
Oil addition: Add a bit of peanut oil or cooking oil fora creamier texture.
Sweetener options: Both jaggery and honey work well as sweeteners. If using jaggery, ensure it is cleaned to avoid impurities.
Storage: Refrigerate the peanut butter to extend its shelf life. It may thicken slightly after a week but will remain spreadable.
Peanut Skin: Using peanuts with their skin possible, but note that it might introduce a slightly bitter taste.
Equipment Choice: A mixer jar or food processor works for grinding, choose whichever you have.
Chunky Versions: For chunky peanut butter, reserve a handful of peanuts and add them at the final stage. Pulse briefly to incorporate crunchy bits.
Flavour Variations: Customize by adding cinnamon, cocoa powder or vanilla essence. Feel free to experiment with creative flavour combinations.
