Homemade Bread Crumb

Don’t throw away your stale breads, Let’s make some tasty breadcrumbs. Homemade bread crumbs recipe is an easy and basic recipe, it may seem to you as an unnecessary task, why not buy it from grocery store? But trust me making your own breadcrumb is worthier in taste wise, they are crispy, crunchy & rich and that can add an extra layer of texture to any dish. Also, it will help reducing food waste as bread crumbs are made with stale bread. Homemade bread crumbs taste much better than the store-bought stuff.

Bread crumb is an important ingredient for deep frying snacks like rolls, cutlets, other yummy starters, topping for pasta& salad, meatballs, casseroles, pudding, stuffing, desserts and so on.

What type of bread is used?

For making bread crumb all kind of bread can be used, artisan sourdough bread, low carb, gluten free, whole wheat, white bread, whole grain, hamburger, hot dog bun, pretzel, French and almost any kind of bread.

Fresh bread vs. old bread

Stale bread, a few days old is best because the loaf should be dry.

If you are in hurry and you don’t have any leftover stale bread you can dry it out using a toaster or in hot tawa or pop it into a preheated oven @300ºF or 149°C for few minutes.

Can you make Breadcrumbs without an oven?

Yes, you can make bread crumb without an oven. You can toast the bread slices in a pop-up toaster and then follow the recipe. Alternately you can toast the bread slices on hot tawa on low heat until both sides of the bread are crispy and then follow the recipe.

 

Can you make Breadcrumbs without a food processor?

Yes, you can make bread crumb without any gadget. First toast your bread in oven or pop-up toaster or hot tawa. Once the bread is crispy break them into smaller cubes, place the smaller cubes into a Ziploc bag and simply crunch it up with a rolling pin and your bread crumb is ready.

How to make Breadcrumbs?

  • Place chopped stale bread in food processor or grinder and blend until you have fine breadcrumbs.
  • You can store breadcrumb as fresh or dry them in a preheated oven @125°C (250°F). Place the breadcrumbs on a baking tray and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until they are crisp. Be sure to stir every few minutes.

How to make Italian Breadcrumb?

  • Place chopped stale bread in food processor or grinder and blend until you have fine breadcrumbs. Mix dried basil, dried parsley, dried oregano and Italian seasoning.
  • You can store breadcrumb as fresh or dry them in a preheated oven @125°C (250°F). Place the breadcrumbs on a baking tray and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until they are crisp. Be sure to stir every few minutes.

How to store homemade Breadcrumbs?

  • You can store fresh breadcrumb in refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Dried breadcrumb can be stored in refrigerator for up to 1 month in an airtight container.

  • Stale bread of your choice,

       Italian Breadcrumb:

  • Dried parsley
  • Dried Basil
  • Dried oregano
  • Italian Seasoning

 

Preparation

 

  • Place your stale bread in food processor or grinder and grind until you have fine breadcrumbs. You can use as in fresh or dry them out.
  • For Italian breadcrumb, mix all the dried herbs in the bread crumb. Use as in fresh or dry them out.

    Drying Breadcrumb:

  • Preheat oven @125°C (250°F) and place the bread crumbs in a baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes or until dry and crisp, stirring every few minutes.
  • Store fresh bread crumb in refrigerator up to 1 week.
  • Store dried bread crumb in refrigerator for 1 months or you can freeze them up to 4 months in an airtight container.
