Gondo Datshi | Bhutanese Cheese Chili Scrambled Egg | Scrambled Egg Recipe | Kitchenstagram
Gondo Datshi, often described as Bhutanese Cheese Scrambled Eggs, is a comforting dish that transforms a simple breakfast into something unforgettable. Soft scrambled eggs are cooked with butter, cheese and chili peppers to create a rich, creamy and spicy meal inspired by the bold flavours of Bhutan. Once you try it, this recipe is likely to earn a permanent place in your breakfast rotation.
The roots of Gondo Datshi lie in the traditional kitchen of Bhutan, where locally produced eggs and cheese have long been everyday staples. Cheese plays central role in Bhutanese cooking, while chilies are celebrated not merely as a seasoning but as an essential ingredient. This combination perfectly reflects the distinctive character of Bhutanese cuisine. The dish is commonly prepared for family meals and shared gatherings, highlighting the country’s strong tradition of communal dining.
Nestled in the Himalayan mountains between Tibet, China ad Nepal, Bhutan has remained remarkably untouched by outside influences throughout much of its history. This isolation has helped preserve a cuisine that is uniquely its own. Home to the world’s last Buddhist kingdom and a population of around 800,000, Bhutan has also gained recognition as one of the happiest countries in the world. If there is a culinary secret behind that happiness, it might just be the country’s love of cheese, which appears in countless Bhutanese dishes.
Inspired by Bhutan’s two signature ingredients- cheese and chili, this recipe gives classic scrambled eggs an exciting twist. The buttery eggs are paired with cheese, onion, tomato and chili peppers, for a delicious fusion of Gondo Datshi and the famous Ema Datshi. The result is a bold, cheesy and flavour-packed breakfast that takes scrambled eggs to an entirely new level. It’s one of the most memorable Bhutanese inspired breakfasts you’ll ever try and is sure to become a favorite.
