It works beautifully with a variety of breads- brioche, whole wheat, Italian or classic French.
Despite its name, French Toast or Pain Perdu isn’t truly French. One tale suggests it was create by Joseph French in the U.S. in 1724, but frying milk and egg soaked bread dates back to Ancient Rome. The modern version likely emerged in the 15th century as a cleaver way to use stale bread.

Creating Fluffy and decadent French toast requires just a handful of simple ingredients you likely already have,
White Bread: Thick-cut, sturdy bread is the ideal base. Slightly stale slices works best, as they absorb the custard-like egg mixture without becoming too soggy.
Eggs: Eggs are essential for binding the batter, eggs provide structure and ensure a creamy, rich texture once cooked.
Milk: Whole milk adds both moisture and richness to the batter, elevating the flavour to a richer level.
Cream: Adding cream to the mix results in thicker, more luxurious batter, elevating the flavour to a richer level.
Sugar: A small amount of sugar in the batter imparts a subtle sweetness, complementing the other flavours.
Orange Zest: Orange zest adds a refreshing flavour to the toast.
Salted Butter: Frying the bread in salted butter enhances its flavour and ensure golden, crispy edges. Serve the warm toast with a pat of salted butter.
Maple Syrup: Drizzle on top, maple syrup adds the perfect finishing sweetness and caramelized flavour to this indulgent dish.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve fluffy French Toast topped with maple syrup, a pat of butter, powdered sugar an fresh fruit like sliced strawberries and bananas for a delightful, visually appealing and mouthwatering breakfast treat.
Storage tips:
Refrigeration: To store French toast, let it cool completely, then place it in an airtight container or Ziplock bag. Refrigerate for 1-3 days.
Reheating: To reheat, use a toaster, skillet or microwave for a quick, delicious breakfast.
Freezing: You can freeze French toast for up to three months. Arrange the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet, freeze for at least four hours, then transfer them to a freezer safe container. When ready to eat, place the frozen slices on a baking sheet and bake @ 375ºF for 8-12 minutes, or until hot and cooked through. This method is perfect for making a big batch ahead of time for quick, delicious breakfasts.
Ingredients
3 pcs. White Bread
2 pcs. Egg
2 tbsp Castor Sugar
30 ml Heavy Cream
50 ml Whole Milk
Orange Zest
1 tbsp Salted Butter
2 tbsp Maple syrup
Preparation
- Step 1: Trim the edges of the bread slices. Keep aside.


- Step 2: In a bowl, whisk together egg, sugar, cream, milk and orange zest.


- Step 3: Place a slice of bread on a plate and pour some of the egg mixture over it and layer another bread slice on top. Repeat by pouring some of the egg mixture and stacking a third slice. Pour the remaining egg mixture over the stack, ensuring all the sides are soaked evenly.


- Step 4: Melt butter in a pan over medium heat. Place the soaked bread stack in the pan carefully. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes each side or until golden. Then brush maple syrup on each side of the toast and toast for a minute per side.


- Step 5: Serve warm with a pat of salted butter or maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar. Enjoy!!
