Why you’ll love this recipe:

  • You’ll love this recipe because it’s better than the store-bought fried onions- extra crunchy and flavourful.

  • It’s quick, easy and saves you money.

  • It’s perfect for topping casseroles and salads etc.

  • Perfect for any festival or family gatherings and potluck parties.

Ingredients needed for French Fried Onions:

This quick and easy recipe uses simple, everyday ingredients for a delicious result:

  • Onions: Onions are the star ingredients of this recipe. I couldn’t find white or yellow onions so I have used red onions.

  • All-Purpose Flour: All-purpose flour creates a crisp coating. If you want to make it gluten free use gram flour as a substitute.

  • Buttermilk: Buttermilk adds richness, and if you don’t have it, you can easily use whole milk. You can make your own buttermilk substitute with whole milk and lemon juice.

  • Vegetable oil: Frying requires a neutral, high smoke-point oil like vegetable oil, peanut oil or canola oil.

  • Seasonings: For seasoning, a blend of paprika, onion powder, salt and crushed black pepper enhances the flavour.

Can I make them in advance? Do they stay crispy?

Yes! You can make them in advance. Just let them cool completely and store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. If you’re using them in casserole, they’ll crisp back up in the oven. For extra crunch, bake them @375ºF for five minutes before serving.

To keep them crispy, drain well, blot off excess oil and ensure they’re fully cooled before storing. Whether adding them to a dish or enjoying as a snack, a quick reheat can bring back their perfect crunch.

Storage tips:

Store Homemade French Fried onions in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. Ensure they are completely cooled before storing. If they loose crispiness, reheat in a 375ºF oven for five minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.

Ingredients

  • 1 no. Onion, Sliced into thin rings

  • 1 cup Buttermilk

  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour

  • 1 tsp Paprika powder

  • 1 tsp Onion powder

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tsp Crushed Black pepper

  • Vegetable oil, for deep frying

Preparation

  • Step 1: Soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for 1-2 hours. In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, paprika powder, onion powder, salt to taste and crushed black pepper.
  • Step 2: Dredge buttermilk soaked onions in seasoned flour until well coated. Before coating the soaked onions in flour drain excess butter milk to prevent clumping.
  • Step 3: In a wok heat vegetable oil. To test to see if your oil is ready for frying, dip the handle of a wooden spoon in the oil and if it bubbles around the handle then it’s ready. Fry onion in batches, stirring as needed, until evenly browned, 2-3 minutes each.
  • Step 4: Drain the fried onions on paper towels and season with salt. Store in airtight container in a dry cool place for up to few days.

Pro tips:

  • For soaking the onions, if you don’t have buttermilk use regular milk as a substitute.

  • Soaking the onions in buttermilk longer helps mellow their sharpness.

  • Before coating the soaked onions in flour drain excess butter milk to prevent clumping.

  • Deep frying the onions yields the crispiest and most flavourful fried onions. While air fryers and ovens work, but they don’t achieve the same crunch.

  • Use French Fried onions for topping casseroles and salads etc.

  • Grind the French Fried onions into crumbs to coat the chicken for extra crispy crust.

  • Top burgers and hot dogs with French Fried onions for extra added crunch and flavour. Or enjoy them as a snack- they are irresistible on their own.
