What is Buttercream?

Buttercream is a sweet, fluffy frosting made by creaming butter and sugar, often with milk for smooth texture and vanilla for a classic flavour. It’s versatile and perfect for cakes, cupcakes and desserts.

Ingredients needed for Buttercream Frosting:

Buttercream frosting recipes generally use the same core ingredients, but the proportions can vary widely. This precise buttercream formula ensures consistent, flawless results every time. Here’s what you need:

  • Butter: The foundation of perfect buttercream is butter. I recommend using salted butter because the salt enhances the overall flavour. However, you can opt for unsalted butter based on your preference. To achieve the ideal silky-smooth texture, the butter should be softened just right. Test by pressing gently- your finger should leave a dent without sinking is completely.

  • Icing Sugar: This sugar is key for sweetening the buttercream and ensuring it’s stable and easy to pipe. Avoid using granulated sugar, as it won’t dissolve properly. Measure icing sugar carefully, similar to flour, without packing it into the measuring cup.

  • Boiling Water: Adding boiling water to the icing sugar helps to dissolves the sugar completely, creating a smooth. Grit-free buttercream with a luxurious, creamy consistency.

  • Vanilla Extract: Vanilla adds an unmistakable richness and aroma to the frosting. If you have homemade vanilla extract, it’s even better for a natural, deep flavour.

Storage Tips:

This Buttercream Frosting is perfect for preparing ahead of time, making it a convenient option for busy bakers.

  • Refrigerator: Store the frosting in an airtight container for up to 4 weeks. Before using, let it come to room temperature, then re-whip it to restore its smooth and creamy texture.

  • Freezer: For longer storage, freeze the buttercream for up to 8 weeks. When ready to use, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator. Once thawed, allow it to reach room temperature and whip it with a mixer for about 5 minutes until smooth and fluffy.

Ingredients

  • 250 gm Butter, softened

  • 125 gm Icing Sugar

  • 40 ml Boiling Water

  • 2 tsp Vanilla

Preparation

  • Step 1: In a bowl combine Icing sugar and boiling water, make sure the sugar is completely dissolved. Then whip the butter until light and creamy for about 7-8 minutes on high speed.
  • Step 2: Once the butter is pale in colour, then strain the sugar mixture over the buttercream and continue to whip until combined. Then add vanilla and whip on high speed for 3-4 minutes until very light, creamy and fluffy.
  • Step 3: Use the buttercream straight away or keep it refrigerated for up to 10 days. Before use make sure it comes to room temperature.

Pro tips:

  • For the perfect buttercream frosting, start by whipping the butter until it’s pale and fluffy before adding the sugar mixture. This step is essential as it incorporates air, making the frosting light, soft and creamy. Whipping also ensures the sugar blends smoothly, preventing any grainy texture.

  • This recipe is easy to adjust, so feel free to double it if needed- its proportional nature makes scaling simple.

  • If your buttercream has been sitting out or chilled, a quick whip once it’s room temperature will restore its fluffy consistency.
