Apple & Cheddar Scones | Kitchenstagram

Apple & Cheddar Scones make a delightful treat, perfect as a snack or served alongside soups and salads. These savory scones bring together tender pieces of apple and sharp bite of mature Cheddar cheese, creating a harmony that highlights the tangy sweetness of apple and the richness of cheese.

Apple & Cheddar Scones balance sweet and savory flavours to perfection. Fresh honeycrisp apples adds sweet and subtle tart, tangy flavour, while sharp cheddar brings a salty richness. The addition of earthy sage enhances the autumnal notes, making each bite incredibly satisfying. With a flaky crust and a soft, tender inside, these scones offer a perfect pairing for comforting dishes like a hearty soup or a robust salad.

The beauty of these scones lies in their simplicity. Rather than roasting the apples, which some recipe call for, this recipe lets the natural sweetness of julienned fresh apples shine through, delivering a delightful tart and sweetness in every bite. However if you want a more intense apple flavour, you could opt to roast them lightly to concentrate their taste before adding them to the dough. Either way, these scones bring a lovely blend of tart apple and savory cheddar, which has been a classic combination since the 17th century.

When baking, the scones fill the kitchen with a heavenly aroma, promising warmth and comfort. They’re a versatile delight that can be enjoyed at any time of day. Warm them up and serve with a bit of butter or Crème Fraîche, or try adding extra cheddar slices and a drizzle of honey for a little extra indulgence. Pair with hot apple cider, tea or coffee for a ultimate cozy experience. However you enjoy them, Apple & Cheddar Scones are sure to bring warmth and satisfaction to any autumn day.

Ingredients needed for Apple & Cheddar Scones:

  • All-purpose Flour: All-purpose flour works best for this recipe, giving the scones structure without being too dense.

  • Apple: Use tart apples for the best flavour contrast with the cheese, though any apple variety will work.

  • Buttermilk: Buttermilk adds a rich, slightly tangy flavour that complements the apples and cheddar, while also ensuring a soft texture. It’s also great as a wash, brushed on top for a beautiful finish. If you prefer an egg wash can be used.

  • Cheddar Cheese: A sharp cheddar provides the best flavour. White or yellow cheddar works, so feel free to choose your favourite.

  • Butter: Butter is key for the scones’ texture and flavour. Use frozen and grated butter. This helps create those flaky, crisp edges and contributes to a wonderful flavour.

  • Baking soda: Making soda helps to rise the scones, adding a light and fluffy texture.

  • Baking powder: Baking powder ensures that the scones stay tender and light with a good rise.

  • Salt: Just a pinch enhances the flavour of the other ingredients.

  • Dried Thyme: Thyme has a natural earthy flavour that complements the richness of the cheddar cheese.

  • Dried Sage: Sage pairs beautifully with apples. A bit of dried sage adds a warm, aromatic quality to these scones without overwhelming the other flavours. I have used dried sage, but you can use fresh if you have them. If you using fresh, double the amount listed in the recipe.

Serving suggestion:

These scones are wonderfully versatile, perfect for any time of day. Enjoy them warm with a touch of butter to savor their light sweetness on its own. For breakfast or branch, pair them with jam or jelly for a delightful sweet-savory combo alongside tea or coffee. Try to serve them warm, these scones promise cozy, fall-inspired goodness in every bite.

Storage Tips:

  • Room temperature: If you plan to enjoy the scones within 1-2 days, you can store them at room temperature. Be sure to place them in an airtight container to keep them fresh. For longer storage, refrigeration is recommended.

  • Freezing & Reheating: Once baked and cooled, scones can be frozen in a freezer friendly container or bag. To thaw, leave them out on the counter for a few hours or overnight in the refrigerator.

  • Reheating: Warm the scones in the microwave for 30 seconds or, bake in the oven @185°C for about 10 minutes to enjoy freshly reheated scones.

Pro tips:

  • The secret to flaky scones are cold or frozen butter. This helps to create those buttery layers you want in a scone.

  • Keep your butter milk cold. Cold ingredients help prevent the butter from melting too quickly, resulting in a better texture.

  • Chop the apple before adding them to the dough to prevent browning.

  • Once shaped, refrigerate the dough for at least 15 minutes. These keeps the butter firm, preventing the scones from spreading.

  • Don’t overwork the dough, knead just enough to bring it together. A rough, shaggy dough is ideal for tender, flaky scones.

  • Avoid adding extra liquid. A dry dough helps achieve the perfect rise without a dense, dry texture.
