It’s the kind of drink that instantly cools you don and leaves you feeling revitalized. Perfect for summer gatherings, backyard barbecues, or simply enjoying at home, this cucumber agua fresca is both easy to prepare and wonderfully satisfying. If you’re looking for a drink that’s naturally cooling and effortlessly delicious, this one will quickly become your go-to.

What is Agua Fresca?

Agua Fresca is beloved Mexican beverage known for its light, cooling and naturally sweet character. Unlike juices, which are often rich and heavy, aguas frescas strike a perfect balance by blending fresh fruit, seeds, grains or flowers with plenty of water. The result is a drink that quenches thirst while still delivering vibrant flavour.

These drinks are not limited to just fruit. While options like watermelon, pineapple and cucumber are classics, traditional recipes also draw from ingredients such as hibiscus petals for a tart ruby-red drink, tamarind pods for a tangy-sweet blend, or rice for the creamy horchata.

What makes them special is their simplicity and freshness. Often just lightly sweetened with sugar and sometimes accented with lime or fresh herbs, they are a healthier, more natural alternative to sodas or bottled beverages. Serves chilled over ice, they are a staple at Mexican markets, street stalls and family gatherings, offering a colourful, refreshing companion to meals or a cooling treat on a hot day.

What is Agua de Pepino?

Agua de Pepino is a light and cooling Mexican drink made from blended cucumbers. Naturally refreshing, it’s perfect for hot days and often shared at gatherings, offering a crisp balance of hydration and flavour in every sip.

Why you’ll love this recipe?

This cucumber agua fresca has so many little things that make it special:

  • Pure & Simple: Made with fresh cucumbers and a splash of lime, it’s light, clean and naturally refreshing.

  • Adjustable sweetness: Sweeten it to your liking- or leave it unsweetened for a crisp, pure flavour.

  • Anytime favourite: While it’s perfect for summer heat, it’s just as enjoyable year-round thanks to cucumbers being easy to find.

  • Hydrating Goodness: With cucumbers being mostly water, every glass feels cooling, energizing and satisfying.

  • Family approved: Kids and adults alike love it, making it a reliable hit at gatherings.

  • Quick & Easy: Just blend, strain and pour- it doesn’t get more effortless than this.

Ingredients needed for Agua de Pepino:

Making Agua de Pepino couldn’t be simpler, and it all comes down to just a few fresh basics.

  • Cucumber: Choose large, regular cucumbers for the best balance of flavour and water content. If possible go for organic cucumbers.

  • Water: The base of every agua fresca. Add enough to achieve a refreshing, drinkable consistency without overpowering the cucumber. The goal is a light, hydrating beverage- not too watery, but not overly thick either.

  • Sweetener: This is all about your preference. White sugar is the most common choice, but agave, honey or even maple will work beautifully. Adjust the amount to suit your taste.

  • Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice brings brightness and a gentle tang that complements the cool cucumber flavour. It’s not essential, but it definitely adds extra character.

Storage Tips:

Storing cucumber agua fresca properly helps keep it fresh and refreshing for longer. Once prepared, pour it into a clean airtight container, glass pitcher or bottles are ideal since they don’t absorb flavours or odours. Always place the drink in the refrigerator right away to maintain its crisp taste. While cucumber water can technically last a few days, its flavour is most vibrant when enjoyed soon after making it. Over time, the natural pulp and juice will begin to separate, which is completely normal. Simply stir or shake the container before serving to restore its smooth consistency. For the best experience, I recommend preparing just enough to enjoy within a day or two, as cucumber has a delicate flavour that fades quickly. If you’re making it ahead for a gathering, prepare it the morning of your event so it stays bright and hydrating. A chilled glass of this agua fresca always tastes best when it’s at its freshest.

Ingredients

  • 2 nos. Cucumber

  • 2 cups Water

  • 2 tbsp Powdered Sugar

  • 1/4 cup Fresh Lime juice

Preparation

  • Step 1: Cut the tips off of the cucumbers and rub the ends of the cucumbers with the tips in a circular motion. This helps to take away any bitterness in the cucumber. Thinly slice some cucumber and keep aside for garnish.
  • Step 2: Then peel and roughly dice the rest of the cucumbers.
  • Step 3: In a blender add diced cucumbers, sugar, water and lime juice and blend until smooth.
  • Step 4: Strain the mixture and discard the pulp.
  • Step 5: Serve chilled over ice, with fresh cucumber slices and chia seeds. Enjoy!!
