Jeera Rice Recipe | Cumin Rice Recipe | Kitchenstagram

Jeera Rice is a simple yet flavourful Indian rice dish made with basmati rice, cumin seeds and ghee. Light, fluffy and mildly spiced, it is the perfect accompaniment to dals, curries and vegetable dishes.

The word jeera means cumin in Hindi, and these tiny seeds are the heart of this classic recipe. Their warm, earthy aroma, combined with fragrant whole spices, transforms plain basmati rice into a delicious side dish that pairs beautifully with almost any Indian meal.

Although I usually prepare this recipe with ghee for its rich taste, you can easily substitute it with any neutral oil to make it completely vegan. I always prefer basmati rice because its long grains and natural fragrance complement the cumin seeds.

Jeera rice pairs wonderfully with your favourite dal, paneer dishes, vegetable curries, or any thick gravy. It also fits perfectly into a traditional Indian thai, making everyday meals feel a little more special.

This recipe is one I return to time and again. Whether it’s a busy weeknight dinner, a relaxed weekend lunch or a festive gathering, Jeera rice comes together quickly and never disappoints. It is elegant enough to serve at house parties yet simple enough for everyday meals.

Ingredients needed for Jeera Rice:

  • Basmati Rice: Use aged long-grain basmati rice for the best results. It is drier, less starchy and cooks into the long, separate grains that make jeera rice so distinctive. Good-quality aged basmati rice work beautifully avoid regular long-grain or jasmine rice as they won’t provide the same texture.

  • Jeera (Cumin Seeds): The key ingredient that gives this dish its signature aroma and flavour. Toast the cumin seeds in ghee before adding the rice for the best taste.

  • Ghee: Ghee adds a richer aroma and authentic flavour, though any neutral oil can also be used.

  • Green Chili: Green Chili is optional, but adds a mild touch of heat.

  • Fresh Coriander: Chopped coriander leaves are sprinkled on top to add freshness and brightness before serving.

Serving Suggestions:

Jeera rice pairs effortlessly with a variety of Indian dishes. Enjoy it with dal tadka for a comforting everyday meal, or serve it alongside Paneer Butter Masala or Chicken Rezala for a rich vegetarian feast. It also complements Mughlai Chicken beautifully for festive occasions. Add it to a traditional thali with chana masala, raita and papad, or use it as the perfect base for vegetable korma or rajma masala on bust weeknights.

Storage Tips:

Allow the jeera rice to cool completely before storing. Refrigerate it in an airtight container for up to 3 days. To reheat, sprinkle a little water over the rice and warm it covered in the microwave or heat it in a pan on stovetop. For longer storage, freeze individual portions in freezer-safe bags or containers. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Pro Tips:

  • Good-quality, long-grain aged basmati rice cooks into fluffy, separate grains and gives the dish its signature texture and aroma.

  • Rinse the rice several times until the water runs clear, then soak it for at least 20 minutes. This removes excess starch, promotes even cooking and helps prevent the grains from sticking together

  • cumin seeds can burn in seconds. Cook them inly until they begin to sizzle, turn lightly golden and release their aroma.

  • After cooking, let the rice sit covered for 5-10 minutes. This allows the grains to firm up and finish steaming for the best texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Basmati Rice, cooked

  • 1-2 tbsp Ghee

  • 1 tbsp Cumin Seeds

  • 1/2 cup Coriander Stalk, finely chopped

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tbsp Sliced Green Chili, (optional)

  • 1/2 cup Fresh Coriander leaves, finely chopped

Preparation

  • Step 1: Heat ghee in a wok and add cumin seeds to it. Stir and once the cumin seeds start spluttering, add chopped coriander stalk and fry for few minute.
  • Step 2: Add salt and stir to combine. Add the cooked rice and stir fry on high heat. Add the chopped coriander and continue to fry on high heat for few more minutes.
  • Step 3: Serve hot. Enjoy!!
