  • Surprisingly additive: Don’t be fooled by their simplicity- these crackers are light, crisp and incredibly moreish.

Ingredients needed for Water Crackers:

  • All-Purpose Flour: The foundation of any good cracker, all-purpose flour creates the perfect balance between crispiness and lightness. With its moderate protein level, it forms enough gluten to hold the dough together while keeping the texture tender and crisp rather than tough. It’s best to avoid self-raising flour, as it causes unwanted puffiness, taking away that signature snap.

  • Salt: A simple yet crucial ingredient, salt brings out the subtle wheat flavour in the crackers. In a minimal-ingredients recipe, it acts as a flavour booster and also helps strengthen the gluten network, making the dough smoother and easier to roll thinly.

  • Water: Water brings the dough to life. It hydrates the flour, activates gluten formation and binds the ingredients. Using plain water ensures a clean, crisp texture- unlike milk or cream, which would make the crackers richer but less crunchy.

  • Vegetable Oil: A little goes a long way in achieving a delicate crisp. It coats the flour particles, limiting gluten formation slightly and creating that irresistible snap without dryness. Its neutral flavour allows the natural taste of the crackers to shine while adding a light, pleasant richness.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve crackers with creamy Brie, soft cheese or your favorite dip for a simple, elegant snack.

Make Ahead & Storage Tips:

You can easily prepare the cracker dough ahead of time for convenience. Once the dough is made, form it into disc, wrap it securely and store it in refrigerator for up to three days. Before rolling allow the dough to soften slightly at room temperature for easier handling.

If you’d like to keep it longer, freeze the wrapped dough in a freezer-safe bag for up to two months. When ready to bake, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight and let it rest at room temperature before rolling out.

After baking, ensure the crackers are completely cooled before storing them. Place them in an airtight container and keep at room temperature for up to a week. This helps maintain their crisp texture and fresh flavour, perfect for pairing with cheese, dips or spreads whenever you need a quick snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour

  • 1/4 tsp Salt

  • 2 tbsp Oil

  • Water

Preparation

  • Step 1: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, oil and water, mix well until all of the flour appears hydrated and well incorporated. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes or until smooth. If the dough feels sticky add flour and add a bit more water if the dough seems dry.
  • Step 2: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let rest in the refrigerator for 1 hour to relax the gluten.
  • Step 3: Preheat the oven @180°C. Grease the baking trays.
  • Step 4: On a floured surface, roll the dough as thin as possible. Using a round cutter, cut as many circles as you can and prick the crackers with a fork in a few places.
  • Step 5: Place on the prepared baking sheets. Bake them in a preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden.
  • Step 6: Remove from the oven and leave the crackers to cool on the tray. Serve with cheese board or any of your favourite dip. Enjoy!!

Pro tips:

  • Roll the dough as thin as possible for the crispiest crackers.

  • If the dough keeps springing back, cover it with a tea towel and let it rest for 15 minutes before rolling again.

  • Poke tiny holes before baking the crackers to release air and prevent puffing.
